Korean Spårtaxi (Tracktaxi) test in Uppsala

15 Aug 2005
Korean company Vectus Ltd. will build a test track for Tracktaxi in Uppsala this autumn. The track will be built across Dag Hammarskold Way connected to the University Biomedical Center. Academic Housing owns the land and is ready to test. Vectus chose Uppsala for Tracktaxi after visiting several candidate cities in Europe.

"This is further evidence that Uppsala is interested in high technology development on an international scale," said Eva Sterte, Acting Head of Trade & Industry for the City of Uppsala.

Vectus is a division of Posco Ltd., one of the world's leading steel companies. The company is creating competitive solutions for urban mass transit. Tracktaxi has the capacity of modern trolleys, but has lower construction cost. Travel speed is at least twice that of bus and tram alternatives, and automation has operating costs lower than in conventional systems.

Vectus made an announcement seeking investors for the development. Swedish partners include Noventus AB, which is developing the control system.

According to Vectus, Uppsala is a town of the right size, and through close collaboration the town and the university can take part in extensive evaluation. Uppsala is also in good position for international development partners due to its proximity to Arlanda [airport].

"Uppsala's role is also part of important development of alternatives for future collective transport, into this part of town we begin to carry out various projects for resource efficient and friendly urban transport. That will also bring increases visiting traffic in the city during the testing period," says Carl-Johan Engström, planning director for the city.
