DaimlerChrysler delays
Smart SUV development
12-23-2004
Detroit News staff, wire and Bloomberg News reports

DaimlerChrysler AG has put development of its Smart ForMore compact sport utility vehicle on hold for three months, pending a review of the brand's lineup, the Smart brand's public relations chief told Automotive News. Smart, part of DaimlerChrysler's Mercedes-Benz Car Group, will not show the ForMore show car at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit next month, but it will mount a Smart display to introduce the brand. The Smart business is under review.

Smart reprieve?
Detroit News, 3-13-2005

Mercedes is studying how to cut [Smart $600 million per year] losses and will announce its plans next month. Many investors want DaimlerChrysler to scrap the Smart business, as it pulled out of the Mitsubishi deal last year. But Cordes rules out the possibility. "Closing down Smart makes no sense."
The company is considering bringing the pint-sized ForTwo two-seater to the United States. But it is rethinking the ForFour car, developed with Mitsubishi, and may scrap a new ForMore compact sport utility vehicle. Such measures could lead to charges that would lower earnings in 2005.

USA Debut Pushed Back
2 models, 700 jobs to be cut

:: Compiled from Ad Week, Stuff.co.nz and Plastics & Rubber Weekly
April 04, 2005

DaimlerChrysler's Mercedes-Benz group said it has indefinitely postponed the U.S. debut of its Smart nameplate.

DaimlerChrysler has pledged to break even on the Smart car in 2007 under a E1.2 billion restructuring programme this year which will result in 700 job losses.  Fixed costs are to be cut by around 30% within the next two years and earnings increased by some E600 million in 2007. Sales efforts for the plastic-bodied vehicle are to be stepped up with 25% more outlets in the existing Mercedes-Benz network.

Mercedes had been expected to spend at least $20 million to introduce the brand, sources said...

DaimlerChrysler will continue production of Smart Fortwo and Forfour, but will stop producing the Roadster and has cancelled plans for the ForMore, the small SUV designed specifically for the U.S. market. The measure is aimed at cutting Smart's fixed costs and helping the unit to break even by 2007, the company said.

The company aims to design a new model that would be a successor to the Fortwo and meet U.S. emissions and safety standards, said Donna Boland, manager of corporate communications at Mercedez-Benz USA. If the company determines the U.S. market will embrace the car, the first models would likely hit showrooms by 2007.
